I was absolutely livid when I saw this in the Spore forums:

I and many others here have got some serious questions about the forums, the lack of professionalism, and the need for information that is not being communicated to the users.

Are we not allowed to discuss SecuROM or DRM at all in the forums anymore?

What is the situation with the silent locking and deletion of topics going on? Shouldn’t there be a standard?

Is there somewhere in particular this topic should be discussed?

Can we get moderating team leads that communicate with their users?

SecuROM as been discussed and discussed so much and it causes arguments in threads. If you want to talk about DRM SecuROM then please use another fansite forum. If there is any change you will be able to read it on the official Spore site.

Please do not continue to post theses thread or you account may be at risk of banning which in some cases would mean you would need to buy a new copy to play Spore.

Let me start out by saying these eloquent words:
1) EA…you can kiss my ass.
2) SecruROM is the MOST useless piece of shit copy protection this side of the Milky Way. It does NOTHING…NOOOTTTTHINNGG, to prevent piracy of PC games. The only thing it does is piss off real customers. Software pirates don’t give a rat?s ass about SecuROM.
3) We paying customers will continue to talk about how useless said “copy protection” software is until you fuckers stop putting it on your products. Get it? Don?t threaten us about what we can and cannot talk about.

…bunch of knobs.

So angry.

D out.

    Great post title :)

Their DRM is pretty atrocious, hopefully the backlash will stop the practice.

Not a fan of DRM, but since I don’t think Spore is that great of a game, I’m kind of apathic over the whole concept. True, limiting people who purchase a product to X amount of installs is not just EA sticking their tongue out at end users, but more like a very ridged middle finger pointing in your face saying screw you and the criminals that steal software. But to forbid the discussion on their forums or you’ll be banned from using the game is pretty drastic for anyone. If anything they should move the discussion to a separate site, but let people vent, because the best way to get feedback about your policies is from the people directly not from an internal memo.

Thankfully Spore turned out to be a disapointment after the hype was said and done, and the game released. I’m hoping lower than expected sales, and even piracy of the non-drm cracked version send a clear message along with the user backlash that this type of “protection” won’t be tolerated by customers. I can’t even believe they’re threatning to lock customers out of the product they PURCHASED because they’re complaining about it being crippled? This is exactly the reason why consumers objected to systems and policies being implemented by companies like this in the first place. Do you need any further proof that you rented Spore for $50 from EA, and they can take it away from you at any time? Or when they decide to just shutoff the authentication servers like the MS/Yahoo/etc music services?

I’ll continue to spend my hard earned cash, especially in this economy with companies like Stardock that put out original quality games without needless drm.

So with that being said, I will give up my spore till thay git over there self and start listening to the gamers that buy there stuff. Now we all know EA so thats not happening so my young naphew will be injoying the game…Thats right I will not just trash something that I paid money for , I will give it to a 9 year old boy who could care less of all this stuff and just loves to play games. The one thing that I can do is not but any expantions that may come out for this game. It’s the only way that I know how to do something to them. I know $30 to $60 is not much to EA ,but thats money I can spend on some othere game with a company that may listen to it’s gamers.

So EA you don’t have to worry about me talking out of turn, because I just want be there.

Question not our copy protection scheme or we shall deprive you of your $50! Our word is law, thanks to that copy protection scheme!

Have you been looking over my show notes? In fact this draconic DRM is the subject of the next “I’m mad as hell and not going to take it any more”. What the protection scheme has done is to encourage piracy instead. Three installs is one thing, but the SecRom program is a whole other ball of wax as grandmother used to say. As for myself, if they ever bring this to their mmo games like Warhammer (and who knows if they have done so without saying anything) I intend on charging EA rental for the space on my hard drive. This garbage is why I will not buy Spore.

That was like 2 weeks ago and EA has confirmed it was a mistake made by an overzealous community person. They will not shut down your game account based on your postings to the board.

  8. beefy says:

The fact that EA was going to use SecruROM on Spore was never hidden. So I guess my question is, why are people buying it, then complaining about the copy protection. EA had your money now, they could care less about what you think about the DRM now. My point is, don’t buy the crap. I know I won’t, especially something with SecruROM on it. I have just heard to many horror stories about it. No game is worth that in my opinion.

  9. Rob says:

Them threatening to basically kill your copy of spore for posting on the forums is exactly the kind of jackbooted thuggery that makes me wary of DRM in the first place.

  10. Dathmar says:

sorry this doesn’t add to the conversation…but –

    “bunch of knobs”

Darren – I thought you were from Canada – not London
    :)
    Made me chuckle

BTW – I agree, that’s way I haven’t got Spore or Mass Effect for the PC
…and now look to people like Stardock for buying games.

  11. Rog says:

You know, my stance has been that I won’t be purchasing Spore until they tone down the DRM, preferably get the game on Steam or somesuch if they still want some sort of copy protection system.

But if they’re treating their players so callously, I think I’ll just skip Spore overall.

Poor Will Wright, it took a little longer for it to happen to him than it did his peers from Bullfrog and Origin, but now EA is getting around to screwing over Maxis games too.

I have several friends that were very cautious about buying WAR due to the first two letters in EA-Mythic. EA is its own worst enemy so much of the time.

  12. Nerrollus says:

EA is a bunch of communists anyway … I hate that company.
