Conan FAQ and… Fallout Online?
First and foremost, thanks to all who commented on my gentle nudge to Massively yesterday…especially the folks from Massively. I read them every morning and I’m really hoping that they do a little re-evaluation of some of that coverage.
I really don’t have much to say today so I’ll just pass on to you some news items I found interesting. First up is Conan and its big ass FAQ. It’s quite detailed and I haven’t had a chance to read all of it just yet. Here’s what they say about the combat, which is one of Conan’s selling points:
The simple answer is: Unlike anything you?ve seen before in any MMO. One of the key features in Age of Conan is its hands-on approach to combat. With Real Combat, we have created a system that really brings players into the game and makes them active participants in each battle they fight. This system gives you control over your attacks in real-time, and requires aiming, planning, and coordination, rather than clicking auto-attack and walk away. Players must make strategic decisions regarding how and where they stand in relation to the enemies they are fighting, as well as figuring out how to circumvent their defenses and do the most damage. We call this the Real Combat System, and it promises to bring a unique element of action to MMO combat.
In other games of the genre, combat is usually as simple as targeting something and clicking a fight button, but in Age of Conan, you actually have to direct your weapons in real-time, guiding your strikes around the enemy?s guard for maximum damage. With this unique system, you can also hit multiple enemies at once, so if you slash your sword through two enemies standing next to each other, both of them will suffer damage. It is all, in a word, real.
Looking forward to it. Only thing I’m worried about when it comes to the combat system is how the player keeps oriented during a fight. It really shouldn’t be an issue for me personally because I’m not too shabby at the ol’ FPS. In the FPS genre, you have to coordinate your movement to what you’re attacking, i.e lead your target, fire while running etc. MMO players aren’t really use to that…so one of Conan’s strengths may be a bit of a weakness. They may find that this will limit their audience a bit?.if they are implementing it in the way that?s in my head right now.
System specs are in there is well with the usual “Don’t Bother” and “Honestly, you need this computer” kind of approach to defining PC gaming specs. Sure, Conan has some neat features; it’s just too bad they can’t start a trend in being up front about what you really need to experience Conan at a solid 30 frames per second.
Again…the FAQ is huge, so go take a look if you are even remotely interested in the title.
Last up…rumors of a Fallout MMO are back again. Along with the KOTOR MMO, this seems to be one of those things that we MMO fans would like to see. This is an interesting little page with some information that points to a Fallout MMO. It’s a job posting with a little detail that you could gloss over if you’re not looking:
Wouldn?t Hurt to Have:
? Previous MMORPG experience.
? Familiarity with the Fallout universe.
So…we could probably look for Fallout MMO news coming out of Interplay soon.
D out.
