Only One King

Something non-gaming related.

So since I got my electric guitar I’ve been really getting into playing the blues with it. The experience of playing this style has been great….so I think I’ve finally found my voice (…I hope…). I haven’t really found a role model for my playing until I discovered BB King. Yeah, I’ve heard of this man before but I’ve never really started listening to him until recently. In my searches for more information on him, I found probably one of the best guitar duels that I have ever seen. It’s between BB King and Gary Moore. If you really watch this, these two gents aren’t just playing the guitar, they are actually talking to each other. It’s….wow….

BB King is awesome. For a rock/blues combo, I always also enjoyed some of Stevie Ray Vaughans more obscure stuff.

Two of my favorite electric guitar-playing bluesmen are Lightnin’ Hopkins (who has a very country blues sort of style) and Howling Wolf (who was big in the 1950s Chicago blues scene.) Rhino put out a great two-disc Lightnin’ Hopkins boxed set years ago that should still be kicking around if you’re looking for some really great music to add to your Christmas list.

I’m glad for you. And for the world, it sure needs more of this kind of music!

I advice checking Otis Rush out. Especially his old Cobra label recordings. King sure got the Blues, but Rush is the Grans Master, IMHumbleO.

I’ve seen B.B. King live and yeah, he’s awesome, but what these two guys were doing in the video really wasn’t a big deal. Gary Moore was usually just repeating what King was doing, and any guitarist who has played for couple decades doesn’t have to think to know where a note is on the guitar… just by virtue of experience.

Anyway, I saw King years ago with Tower of Power, and he really is a lot of fun to see live. His keyboardist at the time was amazing. What that concert taught me is that the blues is more about interpretation than songwriting. I’ve heard King play the same song many different ways.

I saw BB King in concert. I wasn’t very impressed with his guitar playing. His band was incredible as well as the backing guitar player. BB stays in this small box of patterns on his guitar and doesn’t leave it — ever. However, Buddy Guy was there and that dude knows how to play. If you want to see some amazing blues guitarists check out Joe Bonamassa, SRV and Robin Ford.
