Sir Ganks-a-lot
Coyote over at Ten Ton Hammer posted an interesting article (…ok, all his posts are interesting…) regarding an email he got asking him if he’s a PvPer or a “friggin carebear”.
You know, I’ve never really understood the term “carebear” and how it relates, or is even relevant to players who play PvE. Of course, carebears are those wonderful little creatures from the 80′s that have little pictures on their tummies. I play PvE mostly, and last I checked, I didn’t have a picture of daisies on my tummy. All of these terms, “newb”, “carebear”, “leet”, “pwn”, “omgplskthxwtfbyebye”. Is it just the same person sitting in a room somewhere coming up with these things? Is a committee of some sort? I can just imagine the discussion:
“Ummm…ok. We’ve got a problem…”
“What?”
“Well, there is a group of players that like to ride the griffons all of the time. Its a different way of playing. I don’t like it.”
“Well…lets call them some sort of name.”
“Hmmmm. OK..got it. Dung-pluckers.”
“Heh…stupid dung-pluckers.”
As a PvE player myself, I find that I have to try really hard to even be insulted by such a term. I’ve been called it a couple of times and the conversation usually goes like this:
“Hey, Darren”
“Yo”
“You like PvP?”
“Sometimes…”
“Ohhhh….so you’re a carebear? Heh”
“Ummmm…I..guess?”
I would then proceed with whatever I was doing at the time. I really don’t understand what he expected my reaction to be. I really think that this type of name calling is a way for a PvPer to bang his chest and try to call you out. Much like the bully somehow twisting your last and/or first name into a derivative of a female body part. I’m sure it worked great for them in grade 6, so I guess they think the same rules apply in the adult world. Is that what these PvPers are? Grade 6 kids who think they’re still out on recess?
Coyote does make the point that most PvPers are use to the name calling and trash talk within their own little world…so perhaps this is the only thing they know. Finding some obscure and meanless name to call someone is part of their PvP culture…they just extend that to players who don’t PvP.
So to PvPers who insist on this type of stuff…let me just speak for all PvEers right now: Yes yes, you’re penis is big. Yes yes, you’re better than us. Yes yes, the chicks are watching and they want to have your babies. Yes yes, we cry ourselves to sleep at night because you called us names. Can we play our game now?
