Scoring 2008 – MMO Slapdown!

Not to be outdone…I think it is about time I rank my overall wrongness. I’m hoping that I can get as close to zero as possible and prove once and for all, that I am more wrong than John….at all times.

For those who have forgotten my 2008 predictions, head on over here and have a good laugh. For some, I was close…for others, well….

1. Warhammer

Warhammer came out in September, which was off on my prediction of a summer 2008 release…but I was close. The main WAR issue that I stated would be server stress…but just the opposite seems to be happening. There are not enough people for each server to create the feeling of WAR being everywhere. Actually, even when lots of people do show up, performance seems less than stellar. With the recent 1.1 patch and the addition of two new classes, WAR seems to be starting to turn a corner on “finding itself”.

I’m going to give myself 5 out of 10…just because I can ;)

2. AoC

I was wrong on Funcom delaying the release again, but I was right in saying that it won’t perform as well as everyone thought it would. Oh well…so much for being 100% wrong. Also…they seemed to have stuck to their guns on the mature rating which is still surprising to me. Boobs ftw…

2 out of 10 for that.

3. WoW

Wrong….wrong….wrong….wrong. Biggest surprise of the year in terms of expeansions.

I did get the release timeframe correct though. Go me.

1 out of 10.

4. Tabula Rasa

Just for the sheer wrongness of saying that this will be “the big winner of 2008″ and that I’ll get “max level in this game” should be enough for all of you to finally abandon my writings. OK…that is a bit extreme, but I was soooooo off on this.

From a game perspective, it was quite fun at the time and in my defense, I would have laughed at the time if someone told me that it would be canceled almost a year later.

0 out of 10.

5. Vanguard

This one was a bit of mix, so in that light I’m going to give myself a 5 out of 10 on this.

For some reason, I have a soft spot for this title and I really want to see it come out on top….but I’m not certain how realistic that expectation is. It’s come a long way this year, and there have been plenty of updates that have made this title competitive. Only down side is that the launch of VG may have permanently gimped a good game.

6. 5 New MMOs announced.

KOTOR adds up to five…doesn’t it?

2 out of 10…..again, because I can.

7. Star Trek

I was correct on this one, however; it remains to be seen whether Cryptic “cares about the IP” any more or less than Perpetual did. I do like the direction they’ve taken so far and it is one of the MMOs I’m looking forward to in the future.

…Atari buying Cryptic does not make me feel any better, btw. Now I have to expect a rushed release with a laundry list of bugs.

5 out of 10.

8. Going under?

I can’t specifically recall any studios going under….but I’m having a slow day, so I might be wrong ;)

Mind you, there was still quite a bit of “resource adjusting” going on within the industry over the last year. Hmmmm….2 out of 10 for getting in the ball park.

9. Brad McQuaid.

…who?

0 out of 10.

10. Agency

I think this is still a title we all care about. Unknown as to whether the pricing plan will be something that I enjoy or participate in.

3 out of 10 for this one….for no other reason than I like the number 3.

I’m I “sold” on micro transactions as a way to go for a North American MMO title? Not yet.

11. Anime

…yup….still a bunch of over-compensating freaks.

I’ll score myself with two big saucer-like eyes, a large sword and a permanent surprised look on my face.

12. Jumpgate

I think this is not coming out until the spring of 2009…so it can’t vary well be the sleeper hit of this year. I’ll probably reforecast this prediction for 2009 because I think this one may have some legs under it.

0 out of 10.

Winner Review

I said the following games would be winners for 2008: Warhammer, Vanguard, TR and Jumpgate. I think Warhammer is the only one that belongs on that list for this year.

The losers for 2008 were supposed to be: Conan, WoW, Anime, RMT/Microtransactions. WoW is the only one that should not be on that list.

That’s it I think. So…how did I do? I got a total score of 25 out of 120. Percentage wise, that puts me at 20.83% compared to John’s 25%. Yes…I know I didn’t score the Anime prediction, but honestly…who really wants a score for that.

So…it’s official: I was more outrageous and specific than Mr. Noob.

…now where’s my cookie. I was promised a cookie!

D out.
